The project named Enzo Cucchi dalle Collezioni del Castello di Rivoli (Enzo Cucchi from the Collections of the Rivoli Castle) is the first of a series of collaborations between Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea and Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo to enhance cultural promotion in the Cuneo territory

The presentation at the Church of San Giuseppe in Alba of two works by Enzo Cucchi, protagonist of Transavanguardia – Coraggio (Courage), 1998-99 and Piogge Sante (Holy Rains), 1987 – both belonging to the Castello di Rivoli collections, stands out as a great opportunity for a dialogue between the present and the past. The architectural plan comprising the church, erected on the foundations of a private house, built in its turn on Roman and medieval persistent remains (a theatre’s cavea), recalls the complexity and richness of iconographic references of Enzo Cucchi’s research, one of the protagonists of the Italian artistic movement of Transavanguardia. Since the 1970s, Cucchi has explored the power of images created by his own hand through the use of different materials. Elements taken from the historical-artistic, religious and Italian landscape tradition arise from his paintings, giving life to unprecedented imaginaries.

These two works are imbued with a secular sacredness. The baroque tradition of the church interacts with the space-temporal manipulation of the artist's canvases. The hills of the Marches, where Cucchi was brought up, and the slopes of the Langhe seem to merge in Coraggio, in a perturbing spiritual atmosphere, with echoes from the Genesis (the woman’s creation) and from the Gospels (the parable of the Good Samaritan). Whereas iron, neon, wood and oil on canvas are the basic components of Piogge Sante, whose iconography evokes a sundial. The titles of the works create short circuits with the images, further releasing greater energy and interpretative potential.
