Opening on 15th October and running until the end of November in the Confraternita di San Michele di Montà d’Alba, the Exhibition “BY THE EXCELLENT HAND OF MR. RAPOSO”, exhibition that aims to restore the twenty-year relationship with Montà (1774 – 1795) by Vittorio Amedeo Rapous, a figurative painter in royal service and one of the greatest artists of the Piedmontese 18th century. Academic and heir to the expressive tradition of Claudio Francesco Beaumont, of whom he was a pupil at the drawing school in Turin, from the 1970s Rapous was a reference point for the rocaille style evolving towards neoclassicism. The 16 large canvases on display here illustrate this artistic journey.
Promoted by the Municipality of Montà, Parish of Sant’Antonio Abate and Associazione Montata Fangi, the initiative was born with the intent to revive and make known the significant number of works handmade by this court artist, individually present in the Old Parish Church (historical church of Montà, located near the Castle of Morra Lavriano) and, at the same time, as an experimentation with an “ecomuseum” approach to the artistic heritage, i.e. focused on the community that hosts it, so that it can regain possession of it, know it and feel it as its own, be part of its knowledge, well widespread and shared. And, therefore, the community can take care of it and enhance it.
The project, under the scientific direction of Liliana Rey Varela of the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of Alessandria, Asti and Cuneo, could rely on the collaboration of the Fondazione Ferrero and the MUD Museo Diocesano of Alba. Coordinated by the Rocche del Roero Eco-Museum, the exhibition is sponsored by Ente Turismo Langhe Monferrato Roero, Ente Fiera Internazionale Tartufo Bianco d’Alba and Associazione Valorizzazione Roero. The project was achieved thanks to the support of Banca d’Alba and Fondazione CRT as well as through the contributions of Iride, Alma by Giorio, Simplast Group, Cauda Strade, Bruno Cauda and Gianluca Costa
The installation, conceived and developed by STUDIOCANTONO+VALSANIA, makes use of videos by Alessandro Cocito (Legovideo, Turin) and includes the exhibition at the central Confraternity of San Michele of the 16 paintings created by Rapous between 1774 and 1795, which are kept in the Old Parish Church.
The key protagonist of the exhibition is the oval of Sant’Antonio abate (St. Anthony the Abbot), which is presented after its restoration curated by Nicola-Ilengo Restauri of Asti, but also the 14 canvases of the great Via Crucis, represent an extraordinary new feature as they were no longer visible since 2003, when three of them were on display during the exhibition Tesori del Marchesato Paleologo promoted by Fondazione Ferrero of Alba. The exhibition is completed by the altarpiece of San Luigi Gonzaga and the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, still awaiting restoration.
The companies Linea Legno and Casetta Impianti di Montà have collaborated for the installations.
