Donkey Palio

The first Sunday in October, all around the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Alba’s old town, the Donkey Palio is run, the crazy race that sees the city’s nine boroughs compete for the drape.

Prior to the donkey race, on Saturday evening, each borough competes in costumes during the historical re-enactment. storica (link). A theatrical performance by more than 400 actors.

On Sunday, before the race, there is the assignment of the donkeys that run the Palio for each borough.
The assignment is already a preview of the Palio, all played out on ancient schemes and singular contests.

And then comes the real Palio. A goliardic day, staged with total respect for the animals, in an arena full of colours, costumes, bravery and loud cheering.
Then there are two heats and a final round to determine the race winner.
The winner will be awarded with the drape, usually painted by a great artist, who will undoubtedly be able to portray the history of the Palio and the boroughs on the canvas.

Piazza Risorgimento

It is the ancient mediaeval Platea and Roman Forum from which the public streets used to depart: Via principale, Via al Tanaro, Via al San Domenico, Via al Vescovado, Via al Convento di San Francesco, overlooked by the tall Negri tower demolished in 1866. This square represents the historical heart of the city where, among other things, the Duomo stands out, quite imposing with its structure reminiscent of its late-Gothic origins: on the outside visitors can admire the tall bell tower and, inside, various paintings, sculptures and bas-reliefs.
