On the first Sunday of October, in Piazza Senatore Osvaldo Cagnasso, the Palio degli Asini takes place — the lively race in which the nine boroughs of the city compete to win the drappo (the victory banner).
Before the race, at 10:30 a.m. in Piazza Risorgimento, the donkeys that will run the Palio are assigned to the boroughs. This assignment is already a preview of the Palio itself, entirely based on ancient traditions and unusual contests. Then comes the actual race: a playful and cheerful day, organized with full respect for the animals, in an arena filled with colors, costumes, energy, and enthusiastic supporters. This is followed by two qualifying races and the final. The winner will earn the Palio, which this year has been designed by the renowned Alba-born sculptor Riccardo Cordero.
