XX Alba White Truffle World Auction

On Sunday November 10th 2019 in Grinzane Castle  international solidarity will be celebrated via links with the metropolises of Hong Kong, Moscow and Singapore.

An important anniversary for the World Alba White Truffle Auction®, marking twenty years for the main charity event associated with the hypogeous fungus. An event which has been capable over the years of combining the promotion of the area’s premium produce with the donation of substantial funds to charitable causes internationally, amassing the considerable sum of over 4.4 million euro.

The Auction is to take place on Sunday November 10th 2019, as per tradition in the Unesco world heritage site Grinzane Cavour Castle in the presence of celebrities from the worlds of food and wine, entertainment and business, and for the first time the new President of the Enoteca Regionale Piemontese Cavour Roberto Bodrito, who has recently taken over from Senator Tomaso Zanoletti.

Thanks to the organization of the Enoteca Regionale Piemontese Cavour, and the precious support of the Piedmont Region and the Italian National Tourist Board Enit in association with the local Langhe Monferrato Roero Tourist Board and the National Alba White Truffle Fair Organization, once again extraordinary lots of sizeable Alba White Truffles will be put up for auction alongside large format wines produced by members of the Consortium for the Protection of Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe and Dogliani Wines.


Starting at 1 pm, the hall in Grinzane Cavour will be linked live with Hong Kong, where the World Alba White Truffle Auction® enjoys the long-standing support of three Michelin star chef Umberto Bombana. As a matter of fact, the eastern metropolis will be expressing its appreciation for the lots going under the hammer from inside his “8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana” restaurant, with the goal of donating the funds raised to support Mother’s Choice, a charitable association that helps vulnerable children without families and in difficulty in order to give them hope and change their life prospects.

Edition number twenty could not but be special however: for the first time, in fact, the city-state of Singapore will be taking part in the event, competing for the magnificent final lot comprising the finest Alba White Truffle and the most important bottles of Barolo and Barbaresco along with the Russian capital Moscow and the other two venues of Grinzane Cavour and Hong Kong.

In Moscow, a premium lunch prepared by Chef Davide Corso of the Bosco Cafe in the Gum department store on Red Square itself will be dedicated to his Majesty the Alba White Truffle. The event will be preceded on Thursday November 7th by a press conference presenting the World Alba White Truffle Auction® and the Piedmont Region’s prized food and wine products at the Italian Embassy, in the presence of the Italian Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Pasquale Terracciano.

In Singapore, the enthusiasm for the hills of the Langhe of Michelin-starred Chef Beppe De Vito, owner of 5 restaurants in the city, will be the catalyst in the iconic National Gallery for the historic first appointment dedicated to the Alba White Truffle in the south-east Asian capital. An occasion not to be missed for residents of the global centre of culture, business and finance with a population of more than five million.

The last two lots in the Auction will also feature a novel addition: giant 10 kg and 20 kg Moscato Panettone baked by the historic Albertengo company in Torre San Giorgio (Cn), which produces one and a half million traditional Italian Christmas and Easter cakes each year. The Moscato wine-flavoured Panettone will be thirty years old in 2020, and is representative of Albertengo’s Piedmontese heritage.

Each edition of the World Alba White Truffle Auction® celebrates the finest chefs in the world and their skill in using the prized underground fungus by awarding them the status of “Ambassador of the Alba White Truffle in the World”. The title will be awarded this year to two leading standard-bearers of culinary arts in the world.

Massimiliano Alajmo of the renowned Padua family heads up a group dedicated to cuisine of the highest level ever since Le Calandre was opened by his father Erminio and awarded its first Michelin star under his mother, chef Rita Chimetto, in 1992. In 2002, Massimiliano became the youngest ever chef – at the age of just 28 – to receive three Michelin stars for the celebrated restaurant in Sarmeola di Rubano (Pd).

Yong Zhang, born in the small southern China town of Linhai in the province of Zhejiang, is the founder and executive chef of the Xinrongji group. With two restaurants in Shanghai – one with a single Michelin star and the other with two – as well as a one Michelin-star restaurant in Hong Kong, over the years the chef has specialized in outstanding menus pairing dishes with the Alba White Truffle.


The delightful presence of Caterina Balivo has been confirmed for this year as the event’s official presenter following her début in the last edition. The host of the RaiUno TV program “Vieni da Me” on the air every afternoon from 2 pm will be joined by the long-standing “friend of the Auction” Enzo Iacchetti, the comic actor and presenter who is currently appearing in the 2019 edition of Channel 5’s satirical news program “Striscia la Notizia”. Meanwhile, writer and journalist Paolo Vizzari will have the task of examining the food and wine themes associated with the area’s premium products in greater depth.


Edition number nineteen of the World Alba White Truffle Auction® made a total of 393,900 euro, with the final lot going to a Hong Kong entrepreneur for 85,000 euro. The recipients of the proceeds were the “Mother’s Choice” Institute in Hong Kong, the New Alba Bra Hospital Foundation, and the family of Alessandra, a child from Santa Vittoria d’Alba who suffers from the extremely rare IQSEC2 gene mutation. The sums have contributed to the setting up of a research project by Dr. Renieri at the Siena Polyclinic to develop a treatment and support school inclusion projects for children affected by this condition.
